What is Urban Plates doing to protect against the spread of Coronavirus/COVID-19?

As a standard practice at Urban Plates, we adhere to strict cleanliness protocols that are verified by an independent third party (UL’s Everclean). In the spirit of caution, we have further implemented additional safety enhancements to minimize the risk of exposure within our restaurants.

What safety standards are always practiced at every Urban Plates restaurant?

  • Restaurants are fully cleaned daily with hospital grade disinfectant and commonly touched surfaces (including tables, doors, menus, and chairs) are cleaned repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Employees and managers are trained and certified in safety and food sanitation standards, which includes proper hand-washing, hygiene practices, and wearing gloves when handling food.
  • We have open kitchens so you can see who and how your meal is prepared.
  • All restaurants are regularly audited for cleanliness by an independent third-party auditor called Everclean that has rigorous standards.
  • Employees that are not feeling well are instructed to stay home.

  • The frequency of restaurant cleaning has been increased.
  • All employees have been retrained in the importance of and adherence to proper handwashing.

Is eating food from a restaurant a high-risk behavior?

No, eating food from a restaurant is not considered to be a high-risk behavior. Food is not known to transmit COVID-19 and the restaurant industry is highly regulated and familiar with food handling and safety precautions. Additionally, restaurant staff, especially at restaurants that have multiple locations, are known to have thorough training programs for food handling, safety, and hygiene. Most restaurants, including Urban Plates, have instituted additional safety measures to help protect against the spread of coronavirus. For these reasons, Urban Plates is confident our restaurants continue to be safe and healthy dining destinations.

What if someone is concerned about dining in a restaurant?

If you are concerned about dining at a restaurant, you also have the option to get the food to go at the restaurant, order online to-go at UrbanPlates.com (you order online at urbanplates.com, you pay online and then pick up your order from the shelves near the entrance of the restaurant or have the order walked out to you, OR order Urban Plates to be delivered through DoorDash. What are the hand washing procedures for Urban Plates Team Members?

There are seven steps to washing your hands the right way: 1) Wet your hands under hot running water, 2) Apply soap, 3) Rub hands together for 20 seconds, 4) Wash backs of hands, wrists, between fingers, and under fingernails, 5) Rinse hands well under hot running water, 6) Dry hands thoroughly with paper towel or hand dryer, and 7) Turn off running water with a paper towel (not with bare hands).

What kind of disinfectant are we using and why?

Urban Plates uses a hospital grade, EPA-approved disinfectant called “Quat” (quaternary ammonium acid-based sanitizer). It is a no-rinse antimicrobial sanitizer used to disinfect surfaces in hospitals and food processing plants. We use this disinfectant because it kills bacteria and viruses on contact, is safe for use in a restaurant environment, and doesn’t have an unpleasant odor.

In the past I noticed that silverware was in communal baskets, is that still happening?

Two revisions have been made to our silverware policy: 1) The silverware baskets are now stocked with individually wrapped, single-use utensils and 2) The metal silverware have been placed in crocks that distribute silverware individually to guests. We’ve also added sanitizing wipes so that guests can wipe down anything that they aren’t sure about.

What if I’m concerned about the silverware?

Urban Plates cleans its silverware by soaking it in a disinfectant soap bath and then washing the silverware in a dishwashing machine that uses hot water (180 degrees Fahrenheit). This process cleans and disinfects our reusable silverware. We also offer individually wrapped, single-use silverware to guests as an added precaution.

Why aren’t Team Members wearing masks?

According to the CDC, there is no strong evidence that the virus naturally becomes airborne, so only those people who are sick should use masks to prevent the spread of the virus.

How are the trays that guests use at some restaurants cleaned?

The fronts, backs, and sides of the trays are wiped with hospital grade, EPA approved disinfectant after every use and then topped with a clean paper tray liner. Once per day, all trays are submerged in a disinfectant bath using hospital grade, EPA approved disinfectant. If you want to be extra careful, an Urban Plates employee would be happy to either sanitize the tray in front of you, provide you with a new tray liner, or both.

Some of my favorite items are no longer on the menu. Why?

We’ve streamlined our menu to ensure that we’re as efficient and consistent as possible. In these uncertain times, it is important to manage waste so that we can continue to keep our prices low and fulfill our mission to make craveable, clean, wholesome food accessible to all.
